LCC Update: Statement of the assassination of the Syrian Kurdish Activist Mashaal Tammo

Statement of the assassination of the Syrian Kurdish activist Mashaal Tammo

Kurdish Syrian activist Mashaal Tammo engaged in 30 years of political struggle for the sake of freedom and democracy before he fell as a martyr on Friday 7/10/2011 at the hands of Syrian regime shabiha in one of the houses of the city of Qamishly. He survived a failed assassination attempt on Thursday 8/9/2011. The assault on the prominent Syrian opposition figure Riyad Sayf that occurred at noon today was a dangerous development. Then came the assassination of the great activist Mashaal Tammo signaling a dangerous turning point in the way the criminal Syrian regime addresses the revolutionary efforts. The regime adopted methods of direct attacks and political assassination of symbols and leaders of the opposition. It has subjected field leaders of the revolutionary movement to direct assassination and physical liquidation under torture in detention centers which confirms that the regime insists on adopting physical liquidation as the sole method in dealing with the revolution. They are taking advantage of the lax attitude of the international community towards taking strict measures regarding the crimes being committed against the Syrian people and the symbolds of the popular uprising demanding freedom. The Local Coordination Committees of Syria and the Syrian people mourn the freedom fighter Tammo, it salutes the courage of the martyr in his support for the Syrian revolution and his and his leading of the ranks of protesters immediately after his release on 8-6-2010. He gave the revolution a new momentum and we salute the march of the martyr and his prominent role of leadership in the Kurdish political movement and the national Syrian approach to handlng the Kurdish cause. The Local Coordination Committees of Syria condemn the crime of the assassination of the freedom fighter Tammo. It calls upon the international community and the civil society organizations to stand with the Syrian people in its revolution with the aim of toppling the regime and establishing a pluralist democratic state that ensures justice to its sons and holds the criminal pillars of the regime and shabiha accountable.
